Around Tignale . ART CITIES: MILAN

Milano,  the capital of the province with the same name , and of the Lombardy Region, is situated in northern Italy. It has the second highest population of a municipality in Italy (almost 1,300,000 inhabitants) after Rome.
Milan is an important commercial and industrial centre  both in the E.U. and internationally. It is the most important Italian area for the service industry, finance, fashion, publishing and industry, t he stock exchange (borsa) and has branches of many multinational companies. It is one of the major Italian university, editorial and television centres and has the biggest area in Europe for trade fairs.

PLACES TO VISIT

The  Teatro alla Scala in Milan, usually just called  La Scala, apart from being one of the most famous theatres in the world is also known as the temple of opera. It is situated in one of the busiest and most elegant squares of the city, Piazza delle Scala, from which it takes its name. The square in turn takes its name from the Church of S. Maria alla Scala, built in 1381 and named after the person who had it erected, Regina della Scala, wife of Bernabò Visconti.

The Duomo di Milano (cathedral)  is often described as one of the greatest churches in the world and is the most famous place to visit in Milan. It is dedicated to Santa Maria Nascente and situated in the square of the same name (Piazza Duomo) in the centre of the city. One of the most admired and complex Italian Gothic constructions,  it was inaugurated in December 1774.  The famous Madonnina statue on top of a spire, designed by the sculptor  Giuseppe Perego and by the goldsmith Giuseppe Bini in 1762, is the highest point of the Cathedral. It is possible (for a fee) to visit the roof.

The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II  is a covered double arcade formed of two glass-vaulted arcades at right angles intersecting in an octagon; it is prominently sited on the northern side of the Piazza del Duomo and connects to the Piazza della Scala. Named after  Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of the united Italy, it was originally designed in 1861 and built by Giuseppe Mengone between 1865 and 1877.
More than 130 years after its inauguration, the four-story arcade includes elegant shops selling most things from fashion(haute couture) to books, as well as restaurants, cafés and bars. Directly connected to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is Milan's ultra-luxurious Town House Galleria hotel, offering the city's most luxurious (and most expensive) rooms and facilities. The Galleria is the site for many shops of luxury goods , and with Via Montenapoleone and Via della Spiga, is a must for shopping addicts!

Apart from the above mentioned, Milan has an enormous number of mansions, monuments, churches and
other places that merit a visit and that make Milan a place not to be missed.
